Pretty sure they plan on announcing it at the 2016 rally as usual.

I have been known to be wrong before though.

From the rotation schedule I know the Northeast region has 2017s rally. Some have talked about having it in New York state but nothing definite yet.

Doug, hope to have the dates and location nailed down by this years rally so people can plan ahead for next year. The Finger Lakes region of New York will provide lots of attractions to visit and back roads to ride but still working on getting the best deals possible in order to keep the costs reasonable.

Aren't Nationals usually the last week in June? Or does the time and location change yearly? Closest national to me in a while but I've made plans with friends for a different rally.

The national rally moves each year and the date is dependent on the availability of the location. 'Hope you can make it.

This event got me fired up for camping again. We hadn't been camping for 6 years so we got the RV checked out and went for a Halloween weekend near our house. We are planning to come in early and make a week vacation out of it.

I called back in August and got cabin #2. I'm pretty sure all 4 cabins are gone by now. The campground is open seasonally I imagine it's all closed up by now. You might have to try back in the spring

Anybody have any information on motels near the rally site? Lots of choices in Corning - any deals for Rally-goers?

Stay tuned Duncan. Larry Pocobello emailed today to say he is working on it and other pertinent details of the rally. He has made contact with several local motels and is working on special arrangements. More info is coming.

Guess the campground won't open for reservations until Spring.

This will be my first sidecar rally if in NYS even though I've been running a sidecar for years. We'll see...... ?

I have friends who are getting older like myself with a two wheeler and some like my self a three wheeler. I'm encouraging them to consider a sidecar. I believe it's much better than a three wheeler (know several friends with three wheeler accidents).

Being from the Syracuse, NY area this might be something that gets the sidecar concept off the ground here? We really need to promote this in our local clubs etc. (Legion Hall, VFW, church, music festivals)

Maybe some of the local bike shops will add sidecar setups?

Can anyone provide any information about when a registration form for this rally is likely to be available and some information about what the tentative schedule is for the rally? One of the main things I would like to know is how much, if anything, would likely be happening on Sunday, 7/30/17?

rogersfr, am not speaking on behalf of this year's rally organizers, but traditionally the Rally highlight is Friday and Saturday. Sunday most people are packing up and heading back home.

From what I understand it is the grassy area along the front of the campground next to the trout stream. Are you on the Ferenbaugh website. You can see the map of the campground.

In the area for rates on their website, it says they are only open from 4/15 through 10/31 so I'm assuming that's why no one is answering messages or returning calls.

For all you [us] non-campers...

Larry has set up an agreed rate at the Econo Lodge in Painted Post, about 8 miles from the campground. According to the desk clerk, they are undergoing a face lift and the rooms are all being redone with new carpet and fixtures. OK, that's according to the desk clerk but it's the best info I have. I don't know what the rates are yet but I'm expecting something in the $85-$95 range.

Don't call until Tuesday! The group rate hasn't been activated yet. Hopefully, Larry can do that on Monday.

There are both closer and nicer places to stay but the rates are running around $150/night. Priceline has some offers in the $130's but this is an "event weekend" so those rooms might be really scarce.

'See you in Corning!

Al is right on rates but I think it is Americas Best Value Inn. The rates are $84 per night with an extra $10 for pets. I hope to have more solid info today or tomorrow.

Thanks Al for posting that info. When I gave the reservations lady the dates, she immediately said, "Oh, are you with the sidecar group?" Got the $84 a night rate. Looking forward to a great rally, the area looks like it has some great sidecar roads.

Heard a rumor about something very near and dear to sidecar rally attendees....... ICE CREAM! There is a great little place for ice cream in town, even has a non-dairy frozen dessert.

Am planning to arrive Wednesday, July 26th.

Hi Everyone:
There are 4 lists of information for the National Rally in 4 new threads. These are for other campgrounds and lodging, local and New York points of interest and local eateries. I hope you can open these and make a copy to bring with you or load on other devices to bring with you to the rally. If you can't open them email me and I will send you something that will work. See you at the rally.

Sidecar Skills registration will be onsite during the rally, first come-first serve.  The number allowed in each session may be restricted depending on weather and the size of area we are allowed to use.

Safety first.

Did you know that you could sign up for one day or one week of classes in glassblowing this summer? You can at the Corning Museum of Glass near the site of the 2017 USCA Rally, July 27 - 30, Corning, NY

For details go to: http://www.cmog.org/programs/classes

Don't forget to sign up for the National Rally here: http://sidecar.com/rally.asp

I was about to inform everyone that Ferenbaugh Campground is open for business but Chuck has already found that out. Get your camping spot nailed down for the rally. For those not camping we have a block of rooms at The America's Best Value Inn. See details below.

Larry and I walked the rally site today, everything is coming together for a great gathering of sidecarists. Everyone we met there seems excited to host our event. The campgrounds has even lined up a DJ for Saturday night with a 1980's theme dress up contest. So bring your bell-bottoms, big hair and bogey all night long.

There are both open and shaded spots for trailers and RV's with hook ups, a tent camping area with trees, playgrounds and miniature golf, a swimming pool plus a catch and release fishing pond. Being out in the country, the grounds is quiet with cool fresh air.

The school parking lot in town is all ours for two days for the skills refresher sessions. Sign up will be on site at the rally for a limited number in each two hour session.

Of course, we had to check out the quality of the ice cream available in Corning for you guys, (boy, the sacrifices one has to make to please the sidecar community), all I can say is, it tasted as good licked off my fingers as it did in the cone. They even have a non-dairy ice cream if you want.

For the rides, both paved and gravel roads have been identified for those wanting to explore. Maps will be available.

There are so many things to do and see in the Corning area, you could spend a full week here and still not see everything. Besides the huge Corning Glass museum, there is the Curtis Aircraft museum and the Rockwell western art museum. Main street in downtown is lined for blocks with small shops, crafts, collectables, antiques, craft beer, food cafes, etc, etc, etc.

Watch here for more rally details as they become available.

RR, the tent/RV camping fee is paid direct to the campgrounds, it includes access to all of the Ferenbaugh amenities ( of which there are a lot) but not the Rally Fee. Rally attendees staying at a motel or else where do not have use of the Ferenbaugh amenities, i.e. swimming pool, fishing, putt putt golf, etc.
You will need to register with the campgrounds and reserve a spot for your tent. They expect a big turnout that weekend, as they are also hosting their annual Mid-Year party Saturday night. There are families that leave their campers there year round and go every month for the activities.

The USCA Rally fee covers refreshment bar, dinner, breakfast, equipment rental, printing, awards, tech sessions, skills refresher, etc.

Ever wonder how the weight on your rig is distributed? Carrying too much in the sidecar? Back end heavy? Al Olme has agreed to bring three scales so your rig can be correctly weighed after which he will offer you advice on setting the best weight distribution for your rig and how you use it.

Second Session:

ASK THE EXPERT: Claude Stanley of Freedom Sidecars has agreed to offer his expertise and knowledge on any sidecar subject the audience wishes to ask. Starting questions will be: What causes head shake and what steps do you take to eliminate it? What can cause rapid tire wear on the Rear, On the Front? On the Sidecar? How does a anti-sway bar work on a sidecar rig? What is your question for Claude?

These tech sessions are open to registered rally attendees only.

The Corning rally is shaping up to offer a lot of activities and ride destinations of interest to all sidecarists. Did you know that the finger lakes area of NY was home to Mark Twain? There are many sites and museums dedicated to him around Corning.

See you there, last weekend in July.

NEWS FLASH II-
We now have three (3) confirmed Tech Sessions for the upcoming USCA Rally in Corning, NY.

Klaus Hüenecke of EPM Performance ( the suspension guru) will be speaking on setting up sidecar suspension, selecting the right shocks for your rig, how to know when its time to replace the old shocks and answer all of your questions about getting a better riding/handling rig.

We now have three outstanding tech sessions planned that will not be repeated in future rallies. These experts are from the midwest and Eastern side of the US and cannot justify the expense and time away from their businesses to travel to a rally out west. Take advantage of this great opportunity to meet and talk with these sidecar experts.

4248 State Rte 414
Corning, NY 14830
call (607) 962-6193 to reserve your camping/RV spot.

The registration program is not set up to handle day fees.

The Rally in the Valley fee is: $39 for USCA members, $49 for non- members

A surcharge of $10 if registering and paying at the rally.

THANKS (not That's. Darn spellchecker/auto speller inserts more words in my sentences than my wife) for asking, am sure others had the same question. See you at the rally.

Yesterday I made reservation - via htps://bookings.mapquest.com/hotels - at Econo Lodge, Painted Post - $67+tax per night... Didn't know USCA was trying to negotiate a special rate ($85-90) until now...Shucks, I shoulda waited!

Initially I assumed camping was included in registration fee, like every other rally I've attended (hundreds!), unless it is clearly stated to NOT be included....and was planning to camp. Website for this rally leaves a lot lacking----After reading forum about another rally simultaneously at campground, plus lots of dust, plus pay additional for all amenities, a motel seemed the way to go. Convinced a couple of friends to do the same.

One of my favorite rallies of all time was USCA Rally at Stone Mountain, GA .....the worst was USCA (I think it was the second national rally-1980's)) in Pennsylvania....arrived Friday afternoon, left Saturday morning...along with friends. Volunteers do all the work to put these rallies on and make them a success, so thanks to them all.

Add another name to list of experts attending the Rally in Corning: David Hinze (Stroker), creator and owner of Stroker Wheels has agreed to participate with Claude Stanley in the Saturday morning Tech Session.

This is beginning to look like an All-Star Game of the sidecar world.

Joe,

Since you decided to stay at the EconoLodge, I'm guessing you haven't seen the EconoLodge or read the reviews.

I missed the posting about another rally being scheduled for Ferenbaugh's at the same time as ours. What's the rally and where can I read about it?

Also, what extra cost amenities are there? I missed that too.

Joe,

I went out and looked at the EconoLodge again. It looks like they are under new ownership and they are getting better reviews. Much better than they were getting when I made my reservations. One really bad review about bed bugs but since there's just one, I'd probably over look it. Looks like you hit the jackpot.

Still can't find anything about another rally at the campground or extra cost amenities, can you fill us in?

It seems that we have some confusion as to what constitutes registering for the Corning Rally. If you fill out the forms on line and don't pay YOU ARE NOT REGISTERED. A word to the wise. If you haven't paid - please do so.

Duncan! Man, it would be great to see you again!

I'm hoping to attend this year but am not signing up in advance as Tulliver and I will be coming back from a three week ride to the BMW Rally in SLC and the TOR Rally in Paonia CO...with a bunch of exploring to do in Utah and Colorado between and after. Then the long trek across the plains and Midwest. If we do make the USCA rally it will likely just be for a day since by then I'll probably miss my other two dogs (and wife) a lot!

No...too close to our Independence Day weekend travel nightmare for me. Also I've learned not to try to cram too much into a single trip. We'll be leaving Vermont on July 7th; camping in Rocky Mtn Natl Park the 10th and 11th before continuing west. After the MOA rally depending on the weather we'll either drop down to Monument Valley via the Moki Dugway (traveling in the relative coolness of the mornings) then to the cooler heights of the San Juans in Colorado...or scoot directly to those cooler heights.

I can sweat. Tulliver can't!

Pete: Great to hear from you - hope you can get to the Rally in Corning.

Loki Dugway is a great ride - You'll enjoy it. But you can expect daily temps near or exceeding 100.

You might look at the thread[s] on last year's USCA Rally in Hotchkiss CO for info on rides and roads in the Paonia area. There are some REALLY good ones. DirtyDR now lives in Hotchkiss and would be a good source of info.

Hope to see you in Corning. Now that I'm living in VA, maybe I can get my keeper to allow a trip to VT for fresh lamb

I reserved site #4 last week. Wifes new sidecar rig is coming along , praying everything comes together so I can get both rigs there. More than likely she will ride it for the first time while at the Rally. But the main reason for building this rig is so we can all 3 ride together when shes having a bad pain day. I keep telling her once she gets used to it she will love it , cause she doesn't have to hold the bike up.

Wellll now. 3 am Monday morning July 24th. Just got home from Willaimsport PA via Tow truck. My Excursion decided to blow out the front transmission seal which streamed fluid directly onto my now extremely hot exhaust y-pipe. They were able to tow both home in one shot so needless to say I won't be joining y'all for the rally. Have fun and take plenty of pictures.

Doug,

First, glad to know that you all are okay and made it back home safely. Sorry to hear about the mechanical problem.

There is always next year's rally, which won't be far from you either. Think west rather than north.

Hi Doug:
I am sorry to hear of your misfortune. I had to buy a different pickup to be able to make it to the rally this year - towing a trailer so I understand yur pain. The difference is - I am going to be able to make it to the rally. We are in Gettyburg, PA right now. Do you have someone to bring the election results to the rally?

Will you please verify the dates for 2018 Rally? My calendar says June 16, 17, 18 is Saturday Sunday Monday. We normally do Thursday Friday Saturday - that would be 14, 15, 16.

There is a good thread that's several years old now about What Makes a Good Rally.

I thought it would be good to refresh our data.

I have created basically the same questions as the original thread, in a simple online survey format: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/687QXHF

I will compile the results and post them here in the forum for all to see.

Thank you in advance for participating!

For God's sake! We know that you have to modify the head to change true rake. I've done several HD's. My brother always loved to chop the H-- out of every bike he has ever had. Yes, we cut off the head and realigned it.
Anyway, what we're talking about here is the angle of the forks and the geometry of the turning assembly which includes fork angle and fork swing. Get off what is rake vs what isn't rake. If you change the triple tree does it help? A question for your rally groups as being together sparks a good discussion.

I have run into so many sidecarist's (sp) still fighting the turning thing. Some have won 1st place at our rally's but the unit is a bear to ride. Ok,it looks pretty but does that = 1st place?
We need a category at our rally's that = the whole package. Not just pretty.

I talked with one who has won 6- 1st places at rallys but complains and asked my help because the darn Indian is a bear to ride especially with determining how much weight is required depending on everything.

OK, electric lift should be a given including the setup being right. Now, the question I didn't hear at the rally was the issue of triple tree.?

P.S.- We did have a good rally discussion on sidecar brakes and the consensus was don't go there unless you're riding a light bike with a heavy sidecar? Very interesting.... ? I went around and looked and saw many sidecars with brakes that were rusted and/or not working. Most of them...

Rally inclusion should have a tech tent. Inspection and suggestions for improvements. Roll your unit in and get a group look over for inputs. Might be an interesting article for the mag?
Include a category for the best overall setup. Does it ride well or not? Even if it's really pretty? Ok, pretty first, ride second?

Sparechanger,

I moved your post because it is more about rally suggestions than the topic in which it appeared.

The definition of rake i repeated so often because, despite your assertion that "We know you have to modify the head to change true rake" the fact is most folks don't know. We're please to have well informed folks like you here to explain it.

Your ideas for the rally are interesting and we will take them as thoughts for the next rally. Some of them require "experts" that we may or may not have. I particularly like the "tech tent" but we'd have to limit the hours it was open. We can't expect a knowledgeable group to sit there all day waiting for someone to come in. They want to enjoy the rally as well.

Thanks for the input.
