We have again been invited to join the Texas Ural Riders Division (the T.U.R.D.'s) of the Soviet Steeds for their spring muster (a/k/a the Spring T.U.R.D.) at the Brookeland/Lake Sam Rayburn (Texas) KOA Friday-Sunday, May 4-6, 2012.

More details to follow as they develop.

Here's the "scheduled" events as of 3/16/2012:

Friday May 4th:  Meet us for lunch en route at the El Tio restuarant on TX87 North in Hemphill.

I'm thinking of lighting a fire for hot-dogs come Friday evening.

Saturday May 5th:   Breakfast ride:  Riders meeting at the KOA at 8:05am, wheels rolling at 8:15am for a 36 mile ride via FM1 and TX21 to the Pinto Pony Cookie Factory & Restaurant in downtown San Augustine.  Should you plan to meet us there, breakfast is at 9:30.  The folks at the Pinto Pony plan to have us the Dos dos dos Breakfast Especial since it will be Cinco de Mayo:  2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 bacon & drink for $7.50, tax included.

IMPORTANT:  The Pinto Pony is a limited service restaurant and I need to give  'em a head count by Friday noon -- so please RSVP here or PM me if you plan to come.  Someone please remind me to call 'em Friday!!!

Saturday afternoon will be tech/bull sessions and/or sight-seeing/ice cream runs.  Saturday evening meal is TBD.

Brookeland, TX 75931 is just west of U.S. Hwy 96 about 8 miles south of Pineland and 16 miles north of Jasper. The KOA is located at 505 Powell-McCall Road (County Road 212).

Find more info about the KOA here: http://koa.com/campgrounds/brookeland/

It appears the Bass Buster Inn about 8 miles southwest is closest motel: http://bassbusterinn.com/

Also: For the 2-wheel drive Urals, the KOA has access to 200+ acres with ATV trails.  Cool

And, apparently, you can canoe/kayak Mill Creek from the KOA to Sam Rayburn Lake.

What happens at these T.U.R.D. events? I want to go to meet other sidecar people

 Art, the T.U.R.D. is generally a "relaxed" gathering.  I'm working on the particulars, but we're planning a meet up on the road for lunch** on Friday at the Mexican Restaurant next to the Dairy Queen on TX87 North in Hemphill at 11:30, then ride on to the KOA.

 Also working on a group ride for breakfast --well, more like brunch-- Saturday morning about 8:15, including a site-seeing stop or two.  Saturday afternoon might include some area rides (ice cream makes a good destination), sitting in the shade visiting and maybe a couple of sidecar games; the URAL folks generally get into tech sessions on Saturday. Laughing  That's the general idea....

** Revised upon advice from Harleybass below

The main reason they get into tech sessions is because they want to get their Urals back home. Ice cream run sounds a whole lot better to me. BTW, I just informed my girlfriend that I'd be taking the Ural to the Ural function, not the plush, air conditioned, climate controlled Goldwing with the luxurious Hannigan attached.

 Drats! Surprised  It was a good lunch spot back in the 90's.  Thanks Harleybass.  I haven't been down Hwy 87 south of Hwy 21 for a 4+ years.  Any suggestions for a good cafe' for lunch in the Hemphill area?

There is another TexMex place right next to the Dairy Queen, bout a half mile from El Toro. It's clean and has good food, but I don't remember the name. I think it might be El Tio. I'll do some research on it and post back. We live 12 mi. North of Hemphill, and eat there all the time, just never paid any attention to the name.

Heh...heh... Thanks for the forewarning of the closed restaurant, as that will save me a little ribbing from Oldtimer, as I have a history of selecting restaurants that are closed-down and for sale -- even after I have visited 'em in the past month.

Looks like the TexMex next to the DQ is the new target, but please let us know if you have another suggestion next time you venture  to town.  And thanks for helping keep Oldtimer off my back.

We are pretty slim for good restaurants in Hemphill. Seems the local "connoisseurs" seem to prefer the taste of "gourmet corndogs" and other "Deep Fried Delicacies" from the local convience store/bait shop/ laundomat.
We have had some decent restaurants, but they couldn"t compete with the local "Ptomaine Palace's". The TexMex or the Dairy Queen is about as good as it gets!

bon appetit !

 I worked over in Many back in '96 and ate lunch at the old ?El Toro? about once a month, and even stopped by --on purpose-- with Jena a few years ago.  I always enjoyed lunch there.  But, thankfully, I have a fellow sidecarist covering my back this time.  Tongue out   But, hey, if the TexMex is closed, the DQ has ice cream!

Harleybass - 3/9/2012:

... Checked yesterday, the TexMex in Hemphill is named El Tio.

OK folks:  The El Tio it is!   Lunch on Friday, May 4th at 11:30am.

For folks coming from the KOA, I suggest the following ~50 minute route:

North on  US96   ~7 miles to Pineland;

Right on  FM1     ~5 miles to FM2024;

Right on FM2024 ~5 miles to FM183;

Right on  TX184  ~5 miles to Hemphill;

Left   on  TX87     to the El Tio!

We will plan on returning to the KOA via FM83 for a different look.

Jena & I will plan on coming down thru Louisiana crossing Toledo Bend on the Pendleton Bridge on LA6-TX21.

Wife, Rosa and I plan to be there for Cinco de Mayo breakfast. Cabin is already reserved.

Do you know Cinco de Mayo was made possible by a Texan -Ignacio Seguin Zaragoza. He was the Mexican general that defeated a much bigger French army in 1862.

Jena & I are planning on traveling thru Zwolle, LA on the way to Hemphill on Friday, May 4th, and plan to stop to pick up some "world famous" Zwolle Tamales for Friday/Saturday snacks. Let me know if you want up to pick up some for ya. They come in 3 flavors: Mild, Regular & Hot. Last spring they were $6/dozen.

Hey Lee --- Please get me one dozen tamales - Hot flavor .

I have wanted some Zwolle tamales for a long time so I can compare them to our Tamales. The wife and I have a small business providing tamales to non-profits doing fund raisers. I'll take some dozens with me to share - planning on cooking them on site.

I have never been to one of these TURD gatherings - about how many people usually show up

 OK Art, I've added you to the growing Tamale list.  I'm curious too how they compare.

 We generally have about 18-20 rigs show up along with an occasional trike, bike, minivan, etc.   The people count varies through as folks come and go, but generally 20-28 overnighters plus others that visit at various times.

Tahobiker is from Missouri. You know, the "Show Me State." So why don't we all sit around and show him how to eat Tamales

you gonna show him to eat them with or without the corn schuck??

hey, everybody is welcomed while supplies last

Hey Jorge & Charlotte -- welcome to the group. I'm pretty new here myself and this May will be our first event and who knows, could be the last one .

Hope to meet you guys at the muster -- Wife and I will be near the pot of tamales -- the smell will guide you there

Your coming back or not will depend a lot on the quality of the tamales

Lee,

Cheryl and I plan on attending the Spring Muster. We will be in sometime Friday provided I get the sidecar rig together. The ST1300/Hannigan is long gone and I am putting a Ural on a 06 Bonneville T100. Looking forward to seeing you.

Art, the El Tio is on TX87 North of downtown Hemphill -- that's all I know at this point.

If we can't find the El Tio, head for Dairy Queen!!

The El Tio should be at  650 Sabine Street -- TX87 North -- right next to the Dairy Queen!

While getting Jena's rig prepped, Corkie hopped on on the seat and declared that he was ready to go:

Have to agree, great time. Thanks Lee for all the work you did in putting this together. Rudy, set up the den for the bunkhouse when I got home and it worked perfect. Also realized it was half again as large as the original dressing room so that was a pleasant surprise. Art, tamales were great. Thanks for bringing them.

Hi Bob, sure glad you & Cheryl made it over.  The new rig sure looks good.    Maybe I need to start shopping for a Triumph as my Sportster developed an engine knock on the ride home. Frown  Jay at J-n-J Sidecars has the bike for diagnosis.

AS FOR PICS, HERE'S A BETTER IDEA:  Please send your best pic(s) from the Muster along with a brief narrative and/or short  description to editor@sidecar.com or sidecarist@sidecar.com  Martin should be able to work in a couple of pages of pics.  Let's set the Deadline for publication at May 25th, 2012.
