NEWS RELEASE - OREGON STATE POLICE

DATE: October 27, 2004

FATAL MOTORCYCLE CRASH
HIGHWAY 101 SOUTH OF WALDPORT

Contact: Lt. Jerry Palmer
Office: 541-265-5354 x 222
Pager: 541-994-1342

A two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle with a sidecar on Tuesday
left one person dead and another seriously injured.

On October 26, 2004 at approximately 1:30 p.m., a 2001 URL motorcycle
with sidecar operated by WILLIAM SHIRK, age 61, from Tempe, Arizona,
was
following a 2004 Hundai Elantra southbound on Highway 101 south of
Waldport. The Hundai was making a left turn when it was struck in the
driver's side by the motorcycle. The impact caused the motorcycle to
flip, ejecting the operator and sidecar passenger.

Both motorcycle occupants were transported to Pacific Communities
Hospital. WILLIAM SHIRK was seriously injured and later was taken by
LifeFlight to Emanuel Hospital in Portland.

The motorcycle passenger, SANDRA SHIRK, age 60, also from Tempe, was
pronounced dead upon arrival at Pacific Communities Hospital.

Both motorcycle occupants were wearing protective helmets.

The driver of the car was not injured. The passenger received
minor injuries but was not transported.

The crash remains under investigation by the Oregon State Police and
the Multi-Agency Crash Team. The multi-agency team includes the
Lincoln
County Sheriffs Office, Oregon State Police, Newport Police
Department,
Lincoln City Police Department, and the Lincoln County District
Attorneys Office. Additional on scene assistance was provided by the
Central Oregon Coast Fire & Rescue and Oregon Department of
Transportation.

Highway 101 was reduced to one lane, one way traffic for
approximately
2 hours during the investigation.

Lenny,
I am sorry I have heard no futher information as of yet. I believe Felicia Landers of Wagner Cycle will probably be informed before anyone. I am also confident she will let us know what is going on.
At this point it is important for all of us to keep Bill and the ones who may be closer to the situation than us in our prayers.

The following was posted by Felicia Landers at SCT today. Folks, we need to continue to pray for Bill's full recovery and also for the family during this critical time.

FROM FELICIA:
Got this off another board today:

From: Ed Paynter epaynter@greensboroday.org
Date: Wednesday, November 03, 2004 11:27 AM

I received an email from Tom Shirk, Bill's brother, last night with an update on
Bill's health.

I asked Tom if it would be OK to share with the Ural riders and he said yes.

"Bill at the moment is having his third operation to install a tracheal tube to
help with infection and breathing. His injuries are severe. Fractured and
broken ribs, punctured liver, broken femur, broken shoulder blade, really hurt
lungs (they removed part of one), broken tips off vertebrae, broken nose. He
has been on a respirator and heavily sedated since the surgery to stop the
bleeding.

I was informed today that he does have pneumonia. The doctor told me that
pneumonia is the greatest concern right now, but also some encouragement.
"everything that is wrong with your brother can be fixed"

Sandy of course will be his biggest loss. Thanks for everyone's concern for
Bill and Sandy."

Gratefully received,

Tom Shirk

Sorry I am so late in posting, I have been pretty ill with 2 trips to the
hospital.. so not quite caught up. I just got to the email from Bill's brother
and is same info as posted.

I had also heard that the accident occurred because an oncoming car crossed the
center line right in front of them. Word is that Bill tried to get out of the
way and they were forced into the seawall and it flipped the bike.
****************************

I will post anything else I read or hear concerning this devastating accident.
Now we know what happened !

The following was reported at the ISOK list by Mary Weidel at SCT.

This is Meandering Mary out in Portland Oregon. Recently Ed Taylor
let me know that there was a bad accident on the Coast Highway (101)
that involved a sidecarist and his wife from Minnesota.

Someone turned left right in front of the rig and he hit the side of
the vehible at speed. Both he and his wife were thrown from the rig.
She died at the site of the accident. He was life-flighted to a
hospital here in Portland.

He is a long way from home and has no family here. His son recently
flew out from Minnesota and Ed had a chance to talk to him. Bill S.
still has a ventilator tube and cannot talk yet but does understand
and mouths his answers for now. He was in intensive care with a lot
of injuries for a couple of weeks and is now going to be transferred
to a unit of care just below that of intensive. He has a long time
in the hospital yet.

When Ed saw him and his son (son's name I did not get from Ed), there
was some talk by one of the attending doctor's that there may be some
brain damage as well.

Ed has let the Bill and his son know that he is willing to go get the
rig and store it at his acreage if they need that done. And he plans
to stop in as frequently as he can.

Ed has suggested if any of you would be so kind as to write a card or
send flowers etc it would be so welcome as the man is essentially
alone out here having to deal with the death of his wife and his own
serious injuries.

Here is the address:

William (Bill) Shirk
c/o Legacy Emanuel Hospital
2801 North Gantenbein Avenue
Portland, Oregon, 97227

We all need a little boost now and again, so drop a line and wish
Bill continued recovery and let him know the Sidecar community is
thinking of him.

Mary

Claude,

I want to send Bill a card, but I don't want to make any blunders where his wife is concerned. Please, confirm for me that he is completely aware that she did not survive the accident. I know how awful it is to be away from home trying to deal with a loved one having suffered a terrible accident. I don't even want to imagine what this gentleman has to overcome.

I know what you are saying Connie. Things can be awkward at times.Presently I do not know any more than what is written in the posts above. I would think a card of encouragement saying we are standing with him in this difficult time and praying for him would be fine at this point. If I receive any futher news I will post it here and at other sites. I am sure others will as well.

This came from another board where it came from yet another board.

>>>I received the following from Tom Shirk. Posted here with his permission:
I just saw your posting and thought I would let you know about Bill. He is out of ICU and finally off the respirator. His son is there with him. He is fighting pneumonia but that is improved. Hopefully, he will be able to start speaking tomorrow or the day after. I think he is out of the woods, but has a long hospital stay ( 2 weeks +) left and a longer rehab after. Thanks for your concern,

Tom Shirk<<<

I have been really ill , so have not been keeping up with things.

I just heard from his brother today. He is still in the hospital, he will be
there for several more weeks and then a huge rehab.

I was given Bill phone number with the offer to call by his brother. I hope this
okay, but i am going to take the liberty of posting it, so you guys can call him
as well. From my own experience in the hospital, I found it comforting to hear
from my friends.

Also, for those people who have donated $ for Bill and Sandra.. we've managed to
raise just under $500. I want to send the donation off to Bill when he gets
home. I didn't think it would be right to send it to the hospital.

Number is:
Toll Free 866 888 4398 Rm 1540

I just called Bill and he sounds okay. He wanted me to tell all of you Thank you
so much for all the support and cards. That it has really touched him and that
the webboard is such a wonderful place. He wanted to pass on that Sandra passed
doing the thing she loved. That Bill is so grateful for all of your get wells
and caring.
Kate
