Hi, folks. I'm currently setting up a 1983 Virago 920 with a Vetter Terraplane sidecar. I'd appreciate some input on rear spring rates. The stock monoshock works fine, no air or oil leaks and has a wide range of rebound damping adjustment. The stock spring is dual rate, with initial stiffness around 400 lbs/in, going to around 600 for the last inch or so of travel. Most folks feel this is a little soft for 2-up riding. Jacking up air preload is an option, but results in a really harsh ride. I'd prefer to increase the spring rate for sidecar duty.

Is there a rule of thumb for the percent increase I should target over the stock spring rate? I can get Eibach single-rate coils in the correct free length and diameter in 50 lb increments up to 1100 lbs per inch. I was thinking maybe 700? Thanks in advance....

Hmm, lots of views, but no replies..... Was it something I said (or didn't say)?

I read your post and did not reply because I am woefully ignorant with regard to spring rates.

I read your reply so I am replying that I am still woefully ignorant but do hope someone who has a wealth of spring rate knowledge reads your plaintiff plea and expounds on said topic......and soon.
