Subject: non HD sidecar to HD Electra Gldie Ultra


I can buy a non hd sidecar (squire) which has been fitted to an early EVO HD electra glide. Mine is a 2002 Ultra.
1) Will it fit: or what should I have to change to make it fit?
2) What's the advantage or disadvantage of wheel offset (sidecar wheel - motorcycle rearwheel)? HD seems to have zero offset, but most other producers seems to use some kind of an offset.

Harley made some frame changes in 1995, then again in 1997 which limited access for an upper rear mount to the frame. Some sub-frame or bracketry is needed to install the sidecar. We make standard 4 poing mounts for this bike. The squire is a bit different then most sidecars to mount. Our 4 point mounts would be a good starting point and if the bike were in our shop we would have no problem mounting it but to mount it long distance will be difficult to get all of the tubing lenghts correct.
We can also supply you with reverse gear for your bike (in stock) and automotive tires that will fit right on the stock Harley rims.

The 'offset' you refer to is typically called 'lead' (leeed).If you go to the homepage here and download Hal Kendall's manuals there is some good info there for free. In a nutshell (a big one) lead creates a much more stable rig when turning away from the sidecar. Lead is more critical with a sprung rig than with a rigid suspension. It is also more critical with a light outfit. Either way I would not run a rig with no lead at all, rigid or otherwise. Typical lead on most rigs is 10 or so inches..some more some a little less.
